Econet moves to consolidate position

HARARE – Zimbabwe's largest telecommunications operator by subscriber base, Econet Zimbabwe (Econet), is set to consolidate its pole position in the country following the launch of a massive air time promotion.

The promotion, dubbed “Econet massive bonus”, is the first of its kind in Zimbabwe and offers subscribers a staggering 700 percent bonus combo with airtime, data and sms’s after reaching their daily target.

The latest development will come as a relief to millions of Econet’s 9,4 million subscribers who are feeling weight of the current harsh economic environment resulting in depressed consumer spending.

Econet chief operating officer Fayaz King on Thursday said the company came up with the promotion on the realisation of worsening economic conditions in the country.

Zimbabwe’s high unemployment rate, massive company closures, electricity shortages and deflation are forcing the average consumer to spend less and seek to stretch their dollar more than before.

“At Econet we strive to be at the cutting edge to make a difference in our customers’ lives. Today we find our customers under a lot of pressure…things becoming difficult and we always look for ways to make life easier for our customers,” he said.

Since its inception in 1998, Econet has proved a life line to the majority of Zimbabweans not only through its extensive and reliable network but also by offering timely and invaluable promotions, particularly in an economy where the availability of United States dollars is tight.

The latest promotion, which will run for three months, confirms Econet as the most affordable mobile network operator in the country that offers value for money to its clients.

As with Econet’s other free airtime promotions the bonus airtime expires at the end of the same day it was allocated. Subscribers that opt into the promotion are eligible to receive bonus airtime once per day.

The mobile giant noted that the promotion is in line with the company’s vision of connection people to each other and empowering them to create opportunity.

Econet also encouraged subscribers to purchase their airtime from any OK shops and stand a chance to win a Ford ranger, 1 of 1000 phones or airtime.

Econet customers can dial *143# to check their daily target. The promotion is also open to new subscribers.
