HARARE – Zimbabwean Victor Hungwe shocked the bodybuilding world after claiming first position in the U/90kg category at the World Bodybuilding Championships held in Naples, Italy, on Saturday.
This was Hungwe’s maiden appearance at the World contest and had aimed a modest number three finish heading into the competition. The BodyActive Gym athlete secured his ticket to compete at the championship following his victory at the WPF South African nationals in September.
He finished second in the U/90kg at the World Physique Federation (WPF) in South Africa.
The former Zimbabwe Musclemania is currently in France and expected back in the country tomorrow.
“I’m ecstatic, I didn’t expect to win on my maiden appearance, it was a different ball game altogether from what I do back home and had to adjust to almost everything including language, food and the weather,” Hungwe tells the Daily News yesterday.
“The competition was phenomenal with 10 countries taking part, a guy from France finished in second place with an Italian coming third. My heartfelt gratitude goes to my boss, Sue Peters, she has been a mentor and a mother, I wouldn’t be travelling this road if it wasn’t for her and of course my family and fans for their unwavering support.”
It was a journey full of sacrifices for the local hulk. First Hungwe had to withdraw his participation at Mr Zimbabwe contest that was making a return last month after five-year sabbatical.
Instead, he opted to travel to South Africa to intensify his preparations for the world championships, making use of the facilities at Virgin Gym in Sandton.
