Zim riders in contention

HARARE – Zimbabwe Moto-X riders put themselves on course for a strong finish with some stellar rides on day one of the Summer Series at Donnybrook at the weekend.

Peterhouse High School’s Ashley Thixton was one of the standout performers of the local riders after taking the chequered flag in all three heats on offer on Saturday in the 125cc.

Thixton’s best ride came in the first heat where he completed the 1.6 kilometre five laps in eight minutes three seconds and 110 split seconds.

Tafadzwa Mawarire and Bradley Cox will be hoping to find their pace in the last three days of the four day motocross extravaganza to get back into contention in this class.

Zimbabwe's MX 1 contender Jayden Ashwell kept himself in the hunt to lift the MX1 championship after finishing day one seating on second place.

Ashwell is closely behind South Africa’s Kerim Fitzgerald who gave local fans a taste of why he is a multiple South African MX 2 champion after taking positions four, one and two respectively.

South Africa’s Jono Mlimi leads the 50cc after winning all three heats of that category.

Heat two was perhaps Mlimi’s best race as he rode in stellar fashion to finish the allocated four laps of that class in 5 minutes 47 seconds and 293 split seconds.

Zimbabwe’s Daiyaan Manuel currently seats in second place after garnering positions two and three respectively.

Big Chitima will go into day two of the event seating on third place after completing positions five, two and three.

Mlimi is also leading the 65cc after taking positions two, one and two in the three heats of the day.

Mlimi is closely followed by Dalter Venter who started like a house on fire after winning the first heat in in seven minutes 15 seconds and 213 split seconds before faltering in the second where he finished a distant fourth before finding his feet to finish first in the final heat.

South Africa’s Joshua Mlimi seats in first place in the 85cc.

Zimbabwe national Pee Wee champion Emmanuel Bako continued his good run of fortune after taking the chequered flag in all three heats on offer.

The Heritage Primary School student will be confident of going all the way to bag the Pee Wee class come end of day of what is expected to be fast paced and action packed extravaganza which hosts some of the finest motocross riders on the continent.
