HARARE – A new Cricket Centre of Excellence opened at Peterhouse School at the weekend amidst the support of a large number of governors, old boys, parents, pupils and Zimbabwe’s national Cricket coach Bunda Waller.

The new centre, currently unequalled in Zimbabwe, includes 12 international standard grass nets, 4 astro turf nets and an analysis centre all of which will enable both budding and well-established cricketers to develop their skills and techniques under the watchful eye of ex-Zimbabwe cricket player and star, Andy Blignaut, who was recently appointed as the Director of the new facility.

PLOUGHING BACK: The Peterhouse Cricket Centre of Excellence was officially opened by Gary Steyn and the Peterhouse Rector, Howard Blackett on Saturday.

The new cricket centre is the culmination of the vision of Gary Steyn, a Peterhouse parent, who has invested a great deal of time and energy over the past two years ensuring that his vision has become a reality.

Steyn masterminded the project from start to finish and was instrumental in obtaining the necessary donations/sponsorship required to finance its development; thus it was fitting that he was called upon to open the Cricket Centre of Excellence after being welcomed by The Rector, Mr Howard Blackett.

Both Blackett and Steyn emphasised that whilst the new facility has been created at Peterhouse it is hoped that players from all round Zimbabwe will use it.

Blackett said: “This is not a parochial development; I do, of course, want Peterhouse cricket to be the best in the country, but our new Cricket Centre of Excellence is there for all and I very much hope that it will be accessed and used by cricketers from across the whole country and hopefully touring sides will want to use it too.”

Peterhouse is Zimbabwe’s leading independent boarding school educating over 1,100 boys and girls aged from three to 18 just outside of Marondera.
