HARARE – Isaac ‘Sugar’ Chimuchenga was crowned the Botswana Open Bodybuilding contest overall winner during the competition held at the Airport Junction Mall in Gaborone on Saturday.
The diminutive Chimuchenga came first ahead of Botswana’s Gontse “Flex” Sechele who was the defending champion heading into the contest on Saturday.
Simbarashe Fero, the 2012 Mr Harare Open champion, finished in third place while reigning Mr Zimbabwe and Musclemania Champion Chienderamwano came fourth.
Chimuchenga, who is based in Gweru, recently retained his lightweight division title at the Mr Zimbabwe contest held early this month.
He had last won the lightweight division in 2008 before the country’s premier bodybuilding contest took a five-year sabbatical.
National Federation of Zimbabwe Body Building and Fitness (NFZBBF) president Otis Goredema said he was proud of the bodybuilders’ performance.
“I’m proud of them, of course you’ll get the natural feeling of hurt especially from Champion but eventually it will fade away,” Goredema told the Daily News.
“This just shows that Zimbabwean athletes are now a force to reckon within Africa and the successful hosting of the Mr Zimbabwe contest was very important as a frequently-trained body is mature for instance the Olympia night of champions and Arnold Classic all happen weeks or even days apart so this really gave them a huge advantage.”
