HARARE – Business virtually came to a standstill in central Harare on Friday as reigning Mr Ugly William Masvinu took to the streets with a convoy of cars prior to his mock wedding held the same night.
People thronged the streets to catch a glimpse of the celebrated ugly man. Dressed in a beautiful white suit, a smiling Masvinu continually waved hands as his convoy passed hordes of smiling fans.
Six hours later Masvinu 'officially' tied the knot with his all-time sweetheart Alice Chabhanga during a colourful wedding in a packed City Sports Bar.
During the mock wedding, the Epworth-based two-time Mr Ugly winner was flanked by his first and second runners-up.
Comedian David "Apama" Machowa, who was one of the organisers of the event, performed the role of the pastor.
Despite the fact that the wedding took place in a bar, gospel songs including Mathias Mhere's hit Favour were the order of the night.
The event was graced by sponsors of the Mr Ugly competition including Edgar Makunyadze of Lifel Investments who gave the bridegroom Masvinu a helmet, worksuit and a size 13 safety shoe as presents.
Makunyadze told the Daily News that he decided to sponsor the event out of pity for Masvinu.
"Lifel Investments decided to sponsor the event after considering Masvinu's life. This man we are celebrating tonight is not only ugly but poor.
"He even struggles to clothe himself and his family. Therefore since our company leads in selling industrial wear, we find it worthy to uplift his life," said Mukunyadze.
