HARARE – A former police officer and director of Trinsec Security (Pvt) Limited has been hauled before the courts for reportedly extorting $82 000 from BancABC executives.
Alex Mundiya, 34, of Manyame Park in Chitungwiza, lodged his bail application pending trial through his lawyer when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Donald Ndirowei yesterday.
The lawyer told the court that his client was a suitable candidate for bail and ruled out prospects of absconding court proceedings.
He said Mundiya was a sophisticated, former constable with no territorial connections and only has interest in running his company.
The court heard Mundiya is also not a holder of a passport or travel documents.
Prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira deferred proceedings to today for continuation.
Chakurira alleges that on November 4, Mundiya approached BancABC managing director Hashmon Matemera claiming that his company was in possession of the bank’s highly confidential information which he alleged had been leaked by its employees.
Mundiya further stated that the information contained in the documents related to more than 40 of Banc ABC’s valued clients and that disclosure to authorities like Zimra would cause the bank and its clients harm, the court heard.
Chakurira further alleged that Mundiya told Matemera the information in his custody reflected liquidity status of some companies banking with Banc ABC and that information was not disclosed to Zimra to circumvent tax obligations.
It is alleged that some of the mentioned companies included Marange Resources, DMC, Anjin and other mining companies.
Mundiya reportedly demanded payment of $82 200 to release the documents to the bank before they reached Zimra and other concerned authorities.
The matter was reported to CID Serious Fraud on November 8 and a meeting was subsequently scheduled on November 12 where Mundiya, police detectives and the bank’s officials were present.
The former was reportedly arrested at the end of the meeting.
