EDITOR — In as much as we do not want vendors putting up anywhere in the city centre, I do not think chasing and arresting them is the solution for a number of reasons.
Firstly, this hide and seek approach that the council is using has proven a failure over the years.
They have done it since time immemorial but the vendors have always come back with new tricks.
At the present moment, there are no jobs in our country therefore people have sought other ways to survive hence many vendors are on the streets.
For some, renting a shop in the city centre is costly and so some people cannot afford to pay their rents from the little they get hence they resort to selling wares on the streets.
May Harare City Council spokesperson Leslie Gwindi and team sit down and try to come up with better ways that will work well for the city council and the vendors and learn to live amicably.
This operation Regedzai is just a waste of time and money — money that can be put to better use.
At the end of the day, those municipal cops are corrupt.
Some go to the extent of being given bribes so that they do not arrest the vendors and the vicious cycle will keep going. Wake up, Gwindi wake up and smell the coffee.
