HARARE – Silas Songani’s captivating performances this season have been a true testament that you do not have to turn out for one of the three biggest football clubs in Zimbabwe for people to sit up and take notice.
The Harare City speedy winger has lit up the Castle Premiership with skill, speed and control.
And on Sunday, the former La Liga winger reaffirmed his status as one of the hottest properties in top flight football after inspiring Harare City to ruthless 4-0 win over Highlanders.
Ruled out of the title race by critics City produced the biggest win of the weekend to dislodge the Bulawayo giants from the summit of the log and are now one win away from landing the title.
The Sunshine Boys led the rout through Nathan Ziwini’s 16th minute opener before William Manondo increased the lead on the stroke of halftime.
But it was to be in the second half were slippery Songani was to have a major say.
The half started as the first had ended with Ziwini completing his brace 50th minute into the game.
The former Dynamos man was set up by a brilliant combination play between Talent Chawapihwa and the impressive Songani.
Songani, who could have ended with more than one goal on afternoon, completed the rout with a wonderful 65th minute strike.
It was only befitting that the man who has been Harare City’s most consistent performer of the season hammer the final nail to Highlanders’ coffin.
In fashioning that goal, the 24-year-old won possession in the City half and exploited acres of space that had been left behind by left-back Bruce Kangwa, who had ventured forward.
The Aces Youth Academy product beat defender Innocent Mapuranga at the edge of the box, his close control keeping the ball glued to his feet before unleashing a short to beat an on rushing Diya.
The Warriors winger went on to receive a standing ovation from both the Harare City and Dynamos supporters at Rufaro Stadium.
Dynamos fans threw their weight behind City, hoping that the municipality owned club would help them shoot back to the top of the table in the event that they also won against Chicken Inn.
