HARARE – A Norton man will spend the next 13 years in jail for raping a fellow tenant’s seven-year-old daughter.
Nicholas Mbendera, 26, was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment after Harare magistrate Sandra Mpindu found him guilty of rape.
Three years were suspended on condition Mbendera does not commit an offence of sexual nature.
The State urged the courts to consider the age difference of Mbendera and the victim.
They argued that Mbendera had ruined the child’s life by raping her and “a clear message should be sent to would be offenders that men should not take advantage of women.”
“They should be taught to negotiate for sex and not force sex,” Mpindu said.
The State proved that on July 29, the juvenile was in the company of her sister and brother when Mbendera called her to his room.
He asked if the girl had washed her body and when she said “yes”, he lured her into one of their fellow tenant’s room who was absent that day.
Mbendera removed the child’s clothes and raped her before promising that he would buy her potato chips.
He ordered her not to reveal the ordeal to her mother.
The girl later told her aunt about the incident, leading to Mbendera’s arrest.
