Man jailed 15 years for raping ex-wife

BULAWAYO – An Inyathi man who raped and impregnated his 21-year-old ex-wife has been slapped with an effective 15-year jail term.

Collen Ncube of Village 14 Kenilworth area appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Sikhumbuzo Nyathi.

Ncube, who was initially slapped with a 20-year jail term, was convicted on his own plea.

He will however, spend 15 years behind bars after five years of the sentence were conditionally suspended for five years.

In coming up with the sentence, magistrate Nyathi took into consideration the fact that when he committed the offence, Ncube showed no respect for women by treating his former wife as a sex toy or object.

Circumstances are that on November 28 last year at around 9 pm, Ncube went to the complainant’s workplace at Kenilworth Business Center where she is employed as a shopkeeper.

It is reported that he found the complainant in the company of another man only identified as Mike whom he threatened to assault.

Fearing for his life, Mike reportedly fled from the scene.

Ncube then later disappeared to an unknown destination.

The court heard that after sometime, Ncube returned to the complainant’s workplace and found her already retired to bed with her son.

He knocked at her bedroom window and when the complainant inquired who it was, Ncube responded by threatening to harm the complainant if she did not open the window for him.

After discovering that it was the accused, she opened the window which he used to gain entry.

Ncube, who found the complainant naked, forcibly grabbed her while demanding sex but he was turned down.

She started screaming for help but that did not deter the accused as he proceeded to rape her twice without any protection.

Ncube’s ex-wife got pregnant as a result of the rape.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Ncube’s arrest.
