Fireworks at Book Cafe

HARARE – Firecracker Kessia Masona will perform tonight at The Book Café, along with exciting new trio Jam Signal.
These two extraordinary bands will light up the Tuesday night slot at the Book Café, bringing the best of Afro-fusion and afro-contemporary jazz to music fans in Harare.

Kessia Masona is one of Zimbabwe’s most exciting new musical talents.

She has been performing for over 11 years and her signature deep voice, and energetic stage style has earned her acclaim in Zimbabwe and abroad.

Specialising in contemporary Afro-jazz with hints of reggae and rhumba, Masona has been performing since she was 19 years old when she first performed as a back-up singer for reggae band, Crucial Mix in 1999.

She was soon promoted to lead singer and has shared the stage with The Soul Brothers and Dorothy Masuka.

Masona has been a part of the Pamberi Trust FLAME Project since 2009 and has consistently wowed audiences at the female-centric open mic platform, “Sistaz Open Mic”.

From 2008 to 2010 she performed at the International Images Film Festival (IIFF) and in 2010 she performed at The Solo Festival at Pakare Paye.

She has also performed at the Winter Jazz Festival at Jazz 105 in 2011.  In 1999 she performed at The Chimanimani Arts Festival as part of the band Crucial Mix.

Last year, Masona completed training at the Copa School of Performing Arts in Johannesburg where she learnt voice techniques, stagecraft, composing and aspects of the music business.  She has just completed her first album which was released in September this year.

Masona has performed in South Africa and Zambia and was the hit sensation at this year’s Chimanimani Arts Festival.

She is passionate about music and performing and infuses her contemporary style of music with traditional elements and folk songs.

Masona performs on Tuesday night back to back with Jam Signal.

Jam Signal is a fresh new, jazz trio on the rise made up of young, talented instrumentalists.

Their music is a unique amalgamation of groovy funk rhythms and sweet afro-jazz melodies.

They are already making a name for themselves having performed in Kenya earlier this year.
