Mambas live to fight another day

HARARE – Black Mambas kept their Castle Premiership survival hopes alive after thrashing Division One-bound Tripple B 4-1 at Morris Depot on Sunday.

Nicholas Alifandika, Tendai Chinungo, Kasimero Chimbadzwa and Nhlanhla Ncube scored for the police outfit while  Maxwell Mavuto pulled one back for Triple B.

Although they collected maximum points, Mambas are not out of danger yet as they are above the relegation zone by just one point.

Alarm bells should start ringing loudly in the Mambas camp because they have a tall porder in their last game of the season next weekend when they face title chasing Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium.

Both teams need the three points badly on that occasion. If Mambas lose and Black Rhinos get all three points against Monomotapa, it will be a catastrophe for the police side.

Mambas assistant coach Martin Bonongwe praised his players for putting in a good performance and said they still have hopes of surviving relegation.

“The relegation fight is still on but we still have hopes of surviving relegation. For today the boys played very well and we are happy to collect three points,” said Bonongwe.

Triple B coach Peter Manoti said: “We gifted them virtually three goals in the first half. But our goal now is on building a formidable team for next season in Division One.”

The home side dominated the first minutes of the match and opened the scoring nine minutes into the game after Alifandika headed in Innocent Nyoni’s cross.

The visitors were clearly not in the game in the first half and Black Mambas’ second goal in the 34th minute did not come as a surprise.

Chinungo scored with a cracking long range shot after he won the ball outside the box.

A minute later, Black Mambas registered their third goal after Chimbadzwa won possession just outside the box before finding his way past a clutter of defenders to fire past goalkeeper Tapiwa Mafunga.

After the breather, Mambas continued from where they left and scored their fourth goal in the 79th minute after Ncube run through the entire Tripple B defence before he beat Mafunga with a chip.

Triple B pulled one goal back in the in injury time after Mavuto scored with a long range shot.
