WINDHOEK – Zimbabwe beat Kenya 29-14 in the second match of the Windhoek Draught Tr-Nations Rugby Series in Windhoek on Tuesday evening.
In an entertaining match, the Sables streaked into a 26-0 lead at halftime, but Kenya staged a strong comeback in a battling second half display.
For Zimbabwe, fullback Tangai Nemadire scored two tries while flyhalf Lenience Tambwera scored 19 points through one try, four penalties and one conversion.
For Kenya, wing Cyprian Kuto and prop Isaiya Nyariki scored tries while flyhalf Kenny Andolo added two conversions.
The match started dramatically as Zimbabwe attacked from the kickoff, sending the ball down the backline to Nemadire who cut through Kenya’s defence to score the first try. T inside a minute. Tambwera converted to put Zimbabwe 7-0 up within a minute of the start.
Zimbabwe continued to pressurize Kenya into mistakes and Tambwera added two penalties to stretch their lead to 13-0.
Nemadire added a great second try when he was sent over in the corner from a backline movement and although Tambwera missed the conversion, he added a penalty as Zimbabwe went 21-0 ahead.
In the first half injury time Tambwera scored Zimbabwe’s third try when he cut through Kenya’s backline to put Zimbabwe 26-0 up at the break.
Kenya struck back with a vengeance in the second half, and opened their account within a minute of the kickoff. Nemadire failed to control a high ball and Kenyan wing Cyprian Kuto pounced onto the loose ball to dot down unopposed, with Andola adding the conversion.
Kenyan prop Isaiya Nyariki scored their second try when he peeled off from a great rolling maul and with Andola once again converting, Kenya had reduced the gap to 26-14.
Zimbabwe however camped on Kenya’s tryline
Kenyan hooker Sammy Warui was however yellow carded for impeding a Zimbabwean maul and Tambwera put the resulting penalty over to put them 29-14 ahead.
Kenya launched some long-range counterattacks in the final minutes but could not break through as Zimbabwe held on for a comfortable victory.
The final match in the Windhoek Lager Tri-Nations series takes place on Saturday when Kenya take on the hosts Namibia. – The Namibian
