EDITOR — This is a suggestion to our Registrar General.
The metal identity card was a good idea, and good things of course take some investment.
In recent years, Zimbabwe has had accidents which ended in the unsightly charring of the bodies of the deceased.
We are still battling with the recent Chisumbanje inferno where 24 people perished, and their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
My suggestion is that the metal identity cards be reintroduced and issued at the Registrar General’s offices.
As it is our custom and law for people to carry with them their identity cards, the metal identity cards can withstand some fires and aid in the identification of the deceased in some accidents.
The costs of DNA tests are high and can be avoided by use of metal identity cards.
