HARARE – A 21-year-old Budiriro man has been slapped with an effective eight years in prison for theft of two motor vehicles.
Harare regional magistrate Simon Rogers Kachambwa sentenced Freeman Mushava to 12 years behind bars, before suspending four years on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Kachambwa considered that Mushava was a first time offender and that he was a widower with a two month-old baby.
The state proved that Mushava and two other accomplices Robson Kamuzengena and Success Chavhakira stole Wirimayi Mariyapera’s Toyota Hiace at Rufaro Stadium in Mbare on August 5 this year.
The court heard that in July, Chavhakira manufactured a Toyota Hiace duplicate key for Mushava.
Mushava used the duplicate key to steal Daniel Chirume’s Toyota Hiace which was parked outside Rufaro Stadium in Harare on August 18.
The two started ferrying passengers in Makonde district and pocketing the proceeds.
