HARARE – Zifa Northern Region Division One log leaders ZPC Kariba’s title celebrations were put on hold after they played to a one-all draw against Flame Lily at Chikurubi over the weekend.
A win would have all but guaranteed ZPC Kariba’s promotion to the Castle Premiership league.
With three games remaining in the league Jostein Mathuthu’s charges lead the log standing with 71 points.
The failure by the Kariba-based side to collect points has given second-placed Twalumba the perfect opportunity to eat into their lead.
Twalumba managed to collect maximum points after beating Banket 1-0, the win reduced the gap between Twlumba and log leaders to eight points.
ZPC Kariba assistant coach Oliver Mataba said it needed extra effort from his players to win the match as he blamed the bumpy state of the pitch which made it difficult for their team to play their normal football.
“We tried to play our normal game but the pitch was not good but we are urging our players to remain focused,” Mataba told the Daily News.
“These are the kinds of the pitches that we are using and we can do nothing about. So I am saying to the boys if we really want to win the championship then we would need to win matches even in such pitches.
“It was not easy during the course of the season but we kept encouraging each other and as coaches we always tell our players not lose heart when the results were not coming our way.
“Our next match is against Twalumba and we need only one point to win the title. However the race is still on we need to win all of our remaining matches.
"It would be a tough game for us. Twalumba did well against Banket and we know they can surprise us. But we have to fight up to the end and collect maximum points,” added Mataba.
