HARARE – Harare Sports Club edged city rivals Old Hararians by nine runs on Sunday to end the Old Boys’ promising start to their Vigne Cup season.
The defeat saw Old Hararians slide to number four on the log table, tied on nine points with Harare Sports Club and Country Club.
Rainbow now top the 11-team log table with 10 points from three games while defending champions Takashinga 2 are in second place with the same number of points from two games.
On Sunday at Harare Sports Club, the host team elected to bat after winning the toss and by the 45th over they were all out for 212 runs. Mashonaland Eagles batsman Simbarashe Gupo top-scored with 57 runs and added 68 runs for the first wicket partnership with Zimbabwe opener Tino Mawoyo, who was run out for 44 runs.
Former Zimbabwe international Ryan Butterworth picked four wickets for 34 runs from 7.1 overs while fringe national team player Cephas Zhuwao got two wickets for Old Hararians for 39 runs in his eight-over spell.
OH gave away the match, needing 20 runs to win from 10 overs with three wickets in hand. Old Hararians skipper Saad Khan put up a 76-run 114-ball seventh wicket partnership with Kyle Hopper after the visitors had collapsed to 110-6. Their effort was however, not enoughas the team perished for 201 runs after 43.1 overs. Mark Mbofana claimed four wickets for 31 runs from 10 overs while Benjamin Bernett took two for 31 from 7.3 overs.
In the other matches played over the weekend, Country Club beat Royal by eight wickets at Country Club. The visitors were bundled out for 98 runs in 26.1 overs before the hosts made 101 for the loss of two wickets in 15.4 overs.
Defending champions Takashinga 2 thumped Old Malvernians by 134 runs at Takashinga Sports Club while Glenshire won their first match of the season with a six-wicket victory over Uprising at Prince Edward.
Log leaders Rainbow gave a baptism of fire to Mashonaland Central, a select side playing in their first maiden season on invitational basis. The Mash Central team restricted Rainbow to 175 runs inside 42.5 overs but were dismissed for 45 runs in 13.2 overs to lose the match by 130 runs.
