BULAWAYO – Eight touts including kombi drivers have been nabbed after they assaulted three police officers who had arrested an unlicensed kombi driver at a commuter rank.
Norwell Ndlovu, 28, Mfanelo Dube, 30, Perfect Moyo, 19, Lloyd Maphosa, 21, Casper Chisara, 34, Pravado Mguni, 30 Gamelihle Tshuma, 22 and Mpumelelo Moyo, 30, appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Victor Mpofu facing public violence charges.
The accused were not asked to plead and were remanded out of custody on $30 bail each to November 25.
The State alleges that on October 17 at around 11am, police constables Ndlovu, Dzafunwa and Musaniwa were on duty at Egodini commuter omnibus terminus.
During a routine patrol, they apprehended and handcuffed an unlicensed kombi driver known as Mguni.
While escorting Mguni to the police station, fellow touts intervened demanding his release, the court heard.
The touts allegedly threatened the cops before assaulting them.
The State also alleges that the commotion between cops and the touts persisted for a while resulting in one of the taxis parked nearby being damaged in the melee.
The court further heard that, the commotion persisted until the cops relented and released Mguni but sought reinforcement from the PRG base.
It is also alleged that the cops lost belongings worth $250 during the commotion.
This resulted in the eight being nabbed.
