HARARE – Victor Hungwe has pulled out of this weekend’s Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest to fulfil an international World Championship contest set for December.
The Body Active Gym athlete came second at the WPF South Africa Nationals last month to qualify for the World Championships set for Naples, Italy from December 6-8.
Hungwe is set to leave for South Africa this weekend to begin preparations for the global event.
“My main focus is on the World Championships in Italy; I have done three shows in a space of two months recently and I feel I have over worked and don’t want to strain my body further,” Hungwe told the Daily News.
“I would be leaving for South Africa to intensify my preparations courtesy of free training at Virgin Active Gym in Sandton. The World Champs for me are a breakthrough as far as my career is concerned which is why I’m prioritising them ahead of our own nationals.”
Hungwe lost his Musclemania title to Botswana-based Zimbabwean bodybuilder Champion Chienderamwano in August. Chienderamwano is one of the hot favourites to win this year’s Mr Zimbabwe. He however, faces stiff competition from seasoned campaigners Vincent Kandiero and Mr Zim defending champion Tarirai Chirume among other contenders.
The country’s biggest bodybuilding contest returns this weekend after a five-year absence and will be held at the Harare International School in Mt Pleasant.
“I will be back next year for Mr Zim and I wish all the best to my fellow countrymen,” added Hungwe.
