BULAWAYO – Giant Dynamos goalkeeper George Chigova played a pivotal role in his team’s crucial 1-0 victory over their bitter arch-rivals Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.
DeMbare could have easily been overrun by Bosso in the second half had it not been for Chigova’s ingenuity as they struggled to cope with life after the loss of their influential defender Partson Jaure.
Jaure was expelled for fighting with veteran Bosso striker Njabulo Ncube by referee Thabani Bamala in the first half of the volatile encounter.
The Dynamos shot stopper made sure that the hosts’ momentum was disrupted whenever Highlanders were on the ascendancy by going down and signalling for medical attention.
And while this is a gimmick that may have left a bitter taste in the mouths of Highlanders fans, who at some point showed their annoyance at the Dynamos keeper’s antics by pelting him with missiles, it served his team well because it affected Highlanders’ rhythm.
Chigova should therefore take credit for taking the sting out of Bosso’s tail as his actions worked for Dynamos, who managed to keep Bosso at bay despite playing second fiddle for long periods at Barbourfields but went on to secure an important victory in the dying minutes of the game.
It would be unfair to Chigova to just highlight his delaying tactics as the reason why he is our star of the week for this week as the Warriors player also made some important stops to deny Bosso during the course of the game.
Ncube could have opened the scoring for Bosso after 13 minutes of play after getting to the end of a Masimba Mambare cross but his effort from point blank range was kept out by a well-positioned Chigova who went on to make other crucial saves from the marauding Bosso attackers.
Sunday’s victory saw Dynamos reclaiming pole position on the Castle Premiership log with a total of 48 points to their credit.
The Glamour Boys have the same number of point as second placed Harare City but are on top because of a superior goal difference.
There are four matches left in the season and judging by Chigova’s performance on Sunday the giant goalkeeper is going to be one of the key figures in DeMbare’s bid for a third consecutive Castle Premiership title.
