BULAWAYO – The Matabeleland Amateur Body Building and Weightlifting Association will Saturday night hold a selection tournament to choose nine body builders to represent the region at the forthcoming Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest.
The event will be held at Barberton Gym which is situated next to Unity Village and MABBWA organizing secretary Simon Gama said entry to the event will be free of charge.
“We want to revive interest in the sport that is why entry is free and I am inviting members of the public to come in their numbers.
“We have had confirmation from most of the gyms in Bulawayo that they will be sending body builders to compete and we are looking forward to having a successful tournament on Saturday (tomorrow),” Gama said.
The Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest will be held on November 2 at the Harare International School and the competition makes a comeback after a five – year hiatus.
Gama expressed high hopes that the selection tournament will produce body builders who will bring back medals from the national finals.
“I am confident that we will come up with a team that will bring back medals from the national finals and I am tipping Mike Alimu to be a strong contender for the heavyweight division,” he said.
Gama added that it was high time that a Matabeleland body builder won the Mr Zimbabwe title as the region has for a long time been playing second fiddle to their Mashonaland counterparts.
“In the past our juniors used to rule the roost in national competitions but then they would relocate to either Harare or South Africa and that affected our performance in the heavyweight division.
“This is a problem that has led to our failing to bag the big one but this year I think our guys will do well because they are in good shape,” Gama said.
