‘History favours us’

HARARE – Dynamos fullback Thomas Magorimbo believes the odds are heavily stacked against Highlanders ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster clash at Barbourfields stadium due to the champions’ dominance of this fixture since 2006.

The Castle Premiership defending champions are however on edge after surrendering their lead to Bosso two weeks ago.

Highlanders are now on the summit of the league standings with 47 points while DeMbare are in second with 45 points together with third-placed Harare City with five games to go before the season ends.

Last weekend, Dynamos got a timely morale booster after a 4-0 win over relegation threatened Tripple B, their first win in four league games.

And Magorimbo believes that the record Zimbabwe champions will have history on their side as Highlanders have in recent years struggled to beat Dynamos at Barbourfields.

“It’s been a long time since Highlanders beat us and that is history should not end just like that,” Magorimbo told the Daily News yesterday.

“We don’t want to be the first Dynamos squad to lose to Highlanders and that on its own is a motivation for us.

“It’s crucial that all our supporters are behind us from the first whistle. Even if we are one down fans should stay on their feet and continue to rally us on.”

The former Shooting Stars and Kiglon utility player believes an early goal will help Dynamos settle at the hostile venue and put pressure on Bosso.

“It is a big game for us but we are not putting ourselves under pressure. We would obviously want be an advantage if we get an early goal,” Magorimbo

The last time the two sides met in the league, Dynamos were lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw following Partson Jaure’s contentious injury time equaliser.

The goal sparked a lot of debate as Jaure’s shot went in in the 97th minute when the fourth official had initially indicated that there was going to be only six minutes of added.

For many days, the football fraternity analysed and debated over Jaure’s equaliser and it is very likely that a section of the Bosso crowd will have a bone to chew with the defender.
