HARARE – A 23-year-old Hatfield man reportedly raped a 13-year-old girl who had approached him looking for employment, before offering a dollar in exchange for her silence.
Johannes Mugabe appeared before Harare magistrate Elijah Makomo facing rape charges and was remanded in custody to November 5.
Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleges that on August 9 this year, the girl’s mother quizzed her about one of her skirts that was missing. The mother left for Manyame and ordered the girl to look for the skirt.
It is the state’s case that she later sought employment as a housemaid fearing that her mother would beat her up is she does not recover the skirt.
She met Mugabe at Chitungwiza shops and revealed that she was looking for a job, the court heard.
Mugabe, who had hatched a plan to waylay the girl, told her that he could help her get a job in Hatfield since he knew a family that was looking for a house maid.
They allegedly went to Hatfield together and Mugabe took the girl to his house. She was told that she was to sleep at Mugabe’s house before proceeding the following day since it was already dark, the court heard.
It is further alleged that she slept in the same house with Mugabe and shared the same blanket.
It is the State case that during the night, Mugabe asked the girl for sexual favours which she refused resulting in him raping her.
The following morning he allegedly gave her a dollar and ordered her to leave. The girl went to Epworth and started staying with her mother’s elder sister.
She later told her mother that she was raped and the matter was reported to police.
On October 21, the girl led the police to Shakira Road in Hatfield where accused was found and arrested.
