HARARE – Zimbabwe rugby coach Brendan Dawson says he is “excited” by the availability of new overseas-based players for the Sables’ tour of Namibia next month.
Centre Sean Moan, scrumhalf Hilton Mudariki and loose forward Kingsley Lang, all plying their trade at clubs in England, were confirmed as part of the Zimbabwe squad to take part in a tri-nation competition in Windhoek also involving the hosts and Kenya.
The trio will be joined by towering lock forward Martin Wolfenden of Cambridge RFU in England as well as Scottish giants Boroughmuir’s captain Andrew Rose, who both made their test debuts for Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup in June in Madagascar.
“Look, we got to keep looking for the best talent available to us,” Dawson told the Daily News on Tuesday.
“I have left out the hooker Simba Mandioma because I want to give Royal Mwale a chance, so we can see what he can do in the big world. I have said to Simba, ‘look, I have seen what you are made of, so I want to give someone else an opportunity’. He agreed, he understood.
“Martin Wolfenden as well. He is a big, robust lock. Smiley (lock Sanele Sibanda) is also competent, but he is injured. Simba Bwanya is also injured. We just have to continue looking out for quality Zimbabwean players from all over.
“There is Lang, he has a high reputation. He has played at the highest level in Australia and at a good level in England for Jersey. He will be a worthy addition.”
Dawson, whose has been entrusted with guiding Zimbabwe to the 2015 World Cup in England, is also delighted with the make-up of his squad.
“Look, we have Moan, the outside centre, he is a very talented player. I’m very excited to see him come to the party. Danny Hondo is also back, his ankle and hand are looking good. I am delighted to have him back. We have Hilton (Mudariki), that young scrummie from England, another superb talent.”
