Mawiwi refuses to panic

HARARE – Harare City coach Bigboy Mawiwi has vowed not to hit the panic button after watching his side fail to collect maximum points in their last three Castle Premiership matches.

City thrust themselves amongst the favourites for the title fight this year after acquiring more than eleven players during the off-season. But Mawiwi’s men seem to be slumping at the crucial stage.

The Sunshine Boys have only managed draws in their last six matches and a defeat to Dynamos that have left them sitting in third place with 42 points two behind log leaders Highlanders.

While it’s unlikely that the current table will reflect the finishing positions, there has been a shift in balance at the top with Bulawayo giants Highlanders seizing control.

“The matches are tight but we are not panicking at all,” Mawiwi told the Daily News.

“I will never be worried until the last match of the season. The championship is still wide open and there is a lot to play. I think as a team we have done really well and we are proud of that.

“We have played too many matches in short space of time and fatigue somehow contributed to our recent performances. But have since shifted our focus to our next matches.

“The good thing is that we still have to play Highlanders and CAPS United. We are looking at finishing the season in the top there.”

Harare City stormed into Mbada Diamonds Cup semi-finals after dismissing Hwange 2-0 at Dulibadzimu last weekend, and Mawiwi feels their last six matches will be equally important as they bear a strong say in their league and cup double dream.

“We want to end on high. We still have a chance for a double and need to stay focused. Our focus for now is the match against Howe Mine. We are taking this match just like any other game. We want to start picking up maximum points.”
