Businessman faces attempted murder charges

HARARE – A 35-year-old Harare businessman who attempted to commit suicide on Monday night after stabbing his wife and employee with a knife was yesterday hauled before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing attempted murder charges.

Davison Gondo, who rents Chisa Nyama Butchery from Webster Machokoto in Warren Park D, allegedly committed the offence following an argument over electricity bills with his landlord.

Prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira told the court that Gondo resolved the electricity issue amicably with his landlord.

It is the State’s case that Gondo started acting strangely and hallucinating on the same day while counting daily stock with his employee Graim Mushonga.

He reportedly said, “Machokoto I will kill you”. He went on to accuse Machokoto of trying to destroy his business before allegedly stabbing Mushonga with a butcher’s knife on the back and head.

His wife, Anna Tatenda Chikovanyika, 26, tried to intervene but was also stabbed on the left thumb.

When Gondo realised the two had sustained serious injuries, he reportedly attempted to commit suicide by slitting his throat on one of the machines used to slice meat in his butchery.

One of his employees managed to escape and sought assistance from the police.

Harare magistrate Eljah Makomo deferred the matter to October 25 because all parties are currently recuperating in hospital.
