HARARE – The Zifa Northern Region Division One promotion race has reached fever pitch with four teams still in contention to win the sole ticket to the top flight league.
With seven games before the end of the season, there is stiff competition between ZPC Kariba, Twalumba FC, Flame Lily and newly promoted Mushowani Stars.
The Kariba-based side lead the log standing with 59 points, seven ahead of second placed Twalumba, who have the same points with Flame Lilly.
Twalumba however, boost of superior goal difference.
Mushowani have 51 points from 27 games and have proved to be a force to reckon in their debut campaign.
ZPC maintained their seven point lead at the summit of the log after beating Jumbo Giants 1-0 at Jumbo over the weekend.
Raphael Manuwire continued his fine scoring form as he grabbed the only goal for ZPC to maintain their fine run.
Twalumba kept pace with the leaders after beating former Premiership side Blue Rangers 1-0 while Flame Lilly beat Gunners 1-0 to remain in the title race equation.
Mushowni were the biggest winners last weekend after outclassing struggling JMC Academy 4-1.
ZPC Kariba assistant coach Oliver Mataba said he they are still not popping the champagne bottles yet owing to the pressure from the chasing pack.
“The competition is very stiff no one can predict the champions at this stage,” Mataba told the Daily News on Tuesday.
“There is a serious fight, with some teams fighting for the title while some are fighting for relegation survival.
“We don’t want to put ourselves under unnecessary pressure. We want to play our normal game in the remaining matches.
“The good thing is that we are getting the goals but we still need to defend better. For our last game, it was a good display from the boys and I give credit to them for a job well done. It is important to maintain our form and keep on winning as many games as we can so that we will see where we stand at the end of the season.”
ZPC Kariba have become a compact unit and at the beginning of the season after they acquired several former Premiership players whom they blended with some youngsters.
