Dudu Manhenga trial date set

HARARE – A trial date has been set for jazz star Dudu Manhenga, facing a culpable homicide charge after allegedly running over a cyclist.

She faces another charge of driving without a licence.

The imposing diva appeared yesterday at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts, where her matter was deferred to Thursday for trial.

According to state papers, Manhenga, who was a holder of a provisional drivers’ licence at the time of the accident, hit the now-deceased, Graham Martin in Mabelreign, Harare.

It is alleged that the musician was driving a Toyota Spacio when the accident took place in March 2010.
The court heard the jazz artiste was due north, driving along Sherwood Drive, Mabelreign Harare, while Martin was riding a motorcycle, due south.

Manhenga allegedly turned right, and hit injuring him and seriously damaging the motorbike in the process.
“The now-deceased was seriously injured and was ferried to Westend Hospital and died on admission,” reads part of the court papers.

According to state papers, Manhenga was allegedly negligent by turning right in front of on-coming traffic. The State further alleges she failed to keep a proper look out on the road ahead.

The court papers further claim that Manhenga failed to stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.
