Chapungu back in Premiership

GWERU – Chapungu are back in the Castle Premiership after beating Tongogara 4-2 at Amaveni Stadium over the weekend to clinch the Central Region Division One title.

The Airforce side makes a return to the top flight after five years after they were relegated in 2008.

Wild celebrations engulfed Amaveni after the final whistle on Saturday with Chapungu supporters and players celebrating their return to the Premiership.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino is already looking ahead to next year.

"I’m very happy because we worked very hard so that Gweru at least has a team in the Premiership,” an elated Nyikadzino told the Daily News.

“I want to thank the players, the executive and the supporters for making this possible.

"We are now focusing on preparing for the big league next year and the preparations have to start in earnest by giving some players who did not have much game time to play the remainder of the season because we want continuity."

The win at Tongogara saw Chapungu accumulate 64 points, 10 ahead of second placed Town United with five games before the end of the season.

Chapungu are assured of six points in the last two games as their opponents, Tripple B Academy and Gwanda Ramblers have been booted out of the league.

The tally will take them to 70 points while Town United can only reach 69 points if they win all their remaining matches.

The promotion of Chapungu to the Premiership comes as sweet news for football lovers in Gweru who endured a 2013 season without top flight football after Hardbody were relegated in 2012.
