HARARE – Organisers and partners of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) International Expo on Friday undertook a clean-up campaign at the popular Copa Cabana bus terminus in a bid to increase public awareness of the expo.
SMEs International Expo project coordinator, Shadreck Musarurwa said the clean-up exercise was able to meet its objectives.
“We had two objectives; first to raise awareness about the expo which will be held from October 23-27 and secondly, to encourage SMEs to undertake corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“The perception by most SMEs in the country is that CSR activities can only be done by big corporates because they have the money.
“So we wanted to show that CSR is not at all about money; it is possible for SMEs to give back to the community without forking out large sums of money,” said Musarurwa.
One of the country’s leading banks, Standard Chartered Bank, which is sponsoring a number of SMEs who will exhibit during the expo, was also part of the exercise.
Other companies that took part in the clean-up campaign were Ebenezer Properties, IPB Business Solutions, Green World, The Business Connect and Madame Chichi Fashions.
Meanwhile, Musarurwa said preparations for the third edition of the SMEs International Expo were at an advanced stage. He said expectations were high that this year’s expo would surpass the previous editions in terms of organisation and exhibitors.
The expo is slated for the Harare International Conference Centre and is expected to attract participants from various sectors of the economy.
Exhibitors from South Africa, Malawi, Senegal and Zambia are also expected to exhibit during the expo.
In an interview on the side-lines of the clean-up campaign, Chipo Chidhakwa of Madame Chichi Fashions urged SMEs to participate in social responsibility initiatives as a way of marketing themselves and giving back to the community.
“It is important for SMEs to participate in events of this nature as they help in giving back to the community. Clean-up campaigns also help in making the SMEs known by the community,” she said.
