HARARE – A Mhondoro man will spend the next 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a seven-month old baby.
Harare regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya yesterday jailed Shelton Kaseke for molesting the baby, who happens to be his cousin.
The court heard how the 27-year-old man from Matienga Village in Mhondoro, crept into the infant’s hut while she was asleep.
He forced himself on the baby after safely removing a napkin she was putting on.
Prosecutor Kudzai Chigwedere said that on July 27 this year, the infant’s mother left her house to fetch water at a near-by borehole.
The girl, who has a twin brother was left to sleep, while the mother went with the other child.
During the mother’s absence, Kaseke got into the house where the baby was sleeping and removed her napkin before raping her, the court heard.
When the girl’s mother returned she discovered that her daughter was crying and went to attend to her before noticing that she had blood stains.
The court heard that the infant’s mother also discovered that Kaseke’s shirt was blood stained.
Villagers apprehended Kaseke and took him to the police.
A medical examination showed that the girl had a massive tearing on her privates, proving that she had been raped.
