Byo cop up for $10 000 fraud

BULAWAYO – A police officer based at Mzilikazi Charge Office has been arrested after he failed to conceal an offence where he had allegedly converted a fine to personal use.

Lawrence Dlamini, 25, of Sizinda suburb appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Gladmore Mushove facing fraud charges.

Dlamini pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded out of custody to October 10 on $500 bail.

The state alleges that on July 15, the accused was instructed by his superiors at Mzilikazi Charge Office to accept a deposit fine of $20 000 on a docket for an assault case from  Hespemodimo Valela.

Dlamini was given R200 000 which was equivalent to $20 000.

After receiving the fine he reportedly receipted only R100 000 and converted the other half of the fine to his own use.

In a bid to cover up his tracks, the court heard Dlamini ensured that the R200 000 fine was indicated both on the duplicate and triplicate copies.

He then handed the forged duplicate to Valela before photocopying the triplicate and placed it on the docket.

Dlamini allegedly destroyed the original copy.

The offense came to light two months later after the fraudulent transaction when the first copy of the fines book was found blank on the money column during a routine audit.

Dlamini was arrested following an internal investigation.
