Zim gears up for ITF tourney

HARARE – Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) has stepped up their preparations for ITF South/Central African Junior circuit tournament set to start this weekend at Harare Sports Club.

The tournament starts on Sunday with the qualifiers set to run for two days and the main event takes off on July 29 and will end on ?August 3.

Junior tennis players from across the continent are expected to take part as they seek to accumulate ranking points.

TZ administrator Cliff Nhokwara said they are now making the final touches to their preparations.

“Most of the things are in place now. Last year we hosted the same event and this year we have it again and next year we are likely to host it again,” Nhokwara told the Daily News.

“We are just hosting the ITF team and the rest of the players will cater for their expenses and we are looking to host more than 150 players from across the world.”

The tournament is expected to attract players from countries such as Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Rwanda and Botswana.

Nhokwara added that he hoped the tournament would attract some of the best ranked junior players from the continent.

“That would be very beneficial to our players as they earn points. Our local players will find the tournament tough but it will be a good experience, that’s the only way we can improve,” he said.

“In tennis you get better by playing more tournaments and we expect a number of top players to grace this tournament.

“Hosting the tournament is not only a great advantage to the players, but will also boost the country’s image.

“It will prove that we have the ability to stage such tournaments and hopefully pave our way to hosting future events.”

The ITF Junior circuit is a Grade Four ranking competition where by players battle for points which will be used in their world rankings.
