HAIL THE CHAMPIONS: Chidyamakono players celebrate clinching the Copa Coca-Cola 2013 girls’ trophy at Sakubva Stadium on Saturday.
MUTARE – Chidyamakono High School rose above last year’s runner-up heartache to depose two time champions Vainona and lift the Under-17 Copa Coca-Cola girls’ soccer tournament for the first time on Saturday.
Vainona, who had virtually made the Copa title their own with championship winning feats in 2011 and 2012 came unstuck against a resilient Chidyamakono outfit, who they ironically edged 1-0 in last year’s final.
But there was to be no repeat of that act with two first half goals from Tryffin Muzemba propelling the Masvingo Province flagbearers to their first Copa Coca-Cola title.
Hailing from the rural district of Chivi, Chidyamakono loosely translated to “giant eaters” had a tricky route to the final beating Rukweza 1-0, drawing with St Francis, beating Matinunura 3-0 and edging Selonga 5-4 on penalties after their match ended goalless.
Their more illustrious Harare Province counterparts saw off Mosi-0-Tunya 3-0, Selonga 1-0, Mbare 1-0 and St Francis 1-0.
