BULAWAYO – Former Premiership side Quelaton have progressed to the quarter finals of the Machache Meat Tournament after beating New West City 1-0 at Portuguese Sports Club in Bulawayo on Wednesday.
Quelaton got their only goal of the match through striker Toto Banda in the 70th minute to seal their passage into the round of eight.
Banda got to the end of a cross from Patrick Majuru before heading past New West goalkeeper Freedom Magaba.
Quelaton had been the better of the two sides and were unlucky not to find the break earlier in the match after creating a number of scoring opportunities.
The second half was an evenly balanced affair as both sides began to open up the match.
New West almost found the opening goal but Quelaton defender Bruce Sithole made a great goal line clearance.
As the match seemed headed foro a penalty shootout, Quelaton pushed for the winner in the dying stages and were rewarded when Banda found the winner.
After the match, Quelaton coach, Farai Tawachera said their perseverance had carried the day for the former Premiership side.
“Perseverance and keeping on trying carried the day for us. We should have scored more goals, but we failed to put away the half chances we got,” Tawachera said.
