THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has appealed to government to urgently bankroll the impending elections.
Rita Makarau, Zec’s chairperson, told Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in a closed door meeting today that they had already devised the general work-plan for the watershed elections, but the commission is still hamstrung by a lack of funding.
“We are prepared for elections but we are still to get funding, this is the issue we were discussing with the Prime Minister,” Makarau said after meeting Tsvangirai. “We told him that government needs to provide resources. Our machinery is on the ground but we need that funding like yesterday.”
Zec requires $132 million to bankroll the make-or-break elections which are set for July 31.
Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka told reporters that government is hunting for funding.
“The minister of Finance (Tendai Biti) promised to run around and source the money while the PM also stressed that government will do everything in their power to ensure that resources are availed to the body,” he said.
