MASVINGO – FC Platinum reached the semifinals of the BancABC Sup8r Cup after defeating Highlanders 3-1 on penalties at Mucheke Stadium on Saturday after the match had finished goalless in regulation time.
Goalkeeper Francis Tizayi was the Platinum hero as he saved two penalties from Bosso defenders Simon Munawa and Bruce Kangwa while Heritein Masuku saw his effort crash against the post.
The only Highlanders player successful from the penalty spot was forward Milton Ncube, who took the first kick.
The platinum miners scored their three spot kicks through Charles Sibanda, Daniel Veremu and Joel Ngodzo.
The win was a sweet return to domestic club football for newly appointed FC Platinum caretaker coach Lloyd Mutasa, who was taking charge of his first game.
Platinum join Shabanie Mine, who beat Chicken Inn 2-0 at Mandava Stadium on Friday, in the semis.
In the remaining two quarterfinals, Dynamos take on Buffaloes while Monomotapa clash with Motor Action at Gibbo Stadium in Chiredzi on Sunday.
