JOHANNESBURG – Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza hailed her team’s performance after holding Banyana Banyana to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly match here on Saturday.
Though the Mighty Warriors have only one competition this year, the COSAFA tournament in October, the team is not taking any chances in their quest to remain sharp.
And after they thrashed Zambia 1-3 last month in Lusaka, Mighty Warriors fought bravely to hold Banyana Banyana in their own background.
Rudo Neshamba scored the Mighty Warriors’ goal in the first half while Banyana replied through Amanda Dhlamini in the second half.
It could have been even better for the Mighty Warriors had it not for poor officiating by Mozambican referee Novo Ema Paulo who made it hard for the visitors with a lot of questionable decisions.
With the women soccer league expected to commence this month hopes are that the Mighty Warriors will be in shape for the more competitive COSAFA tournament.
“What I can say I that there is a lot of improvement from our last match when we beat Zambia,” Mugadza told the Daily News.
“The girls showed the courage that we need in the team. Despite the fact that our league is not yet started, they are improving as a team and we are looking forward to our next assignments.
“I am happy with the performance of the team especially considering that the league is not yet started.
“We played a team which have their league still running. They have played matches in Cyprus against teams like England, Sweden and France and they are currently preparing to go to Sweden for a tournament.
“So l think as a team we did well. We have proved that we can match one of the best teams in Africa and that’s what we need as a team.
“Although there are still some areas that needs attention, I think we are moving in the right direction.” – Godknows Matarutse
