‘Robbers use sex to evade tax’

HARARE – A couple which used “sex to evade arrest” after a series of robberies around Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb, were yesterday arraigned before a magistrate.

Terrence Chigaba, 29, and Nyararai Matambo, 36, were charged with two counts of aggravated indecent assault and coercing or inducing persons for the purposes of engaging in sexual conduct.

In a ritual-like manner, Chigaba and his friends allegedly took turns to have sexual intercourse with Matambo, in the belief that it would help them not get caught after committing crimes, the court heard.

Prosecutor Junior Mugebe alleges that sometime in April this year, a 15-year-old boy met Chigaba who was in the company of his friends.

Chigaba allegedly enticed him to join their gang saying he was the “right candidate.”

The teenager, it is alleged, accompanied the group to Kuwadzana 4 where they robbed a man of cash and a mobile phone.

They shared the proceeds but the “new recruit” was not given anything.

Allegations are that the boy was ordered to come to Kuwadzana 1 the following day at 8pm and he complied.

He was allegedly taken to Matambo’s house where the gang took turns to enter the house and have sexual intercourse with her.

It is the State’s case that the teenager entered the house last and Chigaba followed him.

The court heard that Chigaba ordered him to also have sexual intercourse with Matambo saying it would make their deals perfect.

Chigaba allegedly fondled his privates as a way of arousing the boy and taught him how to have sex.

It is further alleged that this happened on different occasions without the teenager’s consent. Chigaba allegedly threatened him if he refused to sleep with Matambo.

The boy later made a police report leading to the duo’s arrest.

Magistrate Don Ndirowei remanded Chigaba and Matambo in custody to June 24.

Ndirowei further advised them to apply for bail at the High Court. – Helen Kadirire
