Carnival preps gather steam
HARARE – Stakeholders to the country’s first carnival set for Africa Day in Harare believe naming the event Harare International Carnival will defeat attempts to elicit a national buy-in for the project.
The various representatives of tourist-related organisations who met on Tuesday at the Rainbow Towers overwhelmingly suggested to the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) to instead name the May 25 event Zimbabwe International Carnival.
A sizable number at the consultative meeting also threw their weight against making the carnival a permanent Harare fixture.
ZTA chief operating officer Givemore Chidzidzi assured the meeting that their suggestions on the name and other aspects of the carnival would be seriously considered.
“At the absolute minimum, we want all the country’s 10 provinces to have at least one representative in the carnival”, he said.
“Zimbabwe is targeting 15 countries from all corners of the world though over 20 have already expressed interest in participating including colourful Brazil and Mauritius.
Zimbabwe’s carnival concept presented at the Rainbow Towers meeting revolves around, among others a carnival music night, a carnival DJ clash, a Chipawo showcase, a carnival schools competition, a competition for corporates and carnival concerts that will feature local, regional and international musicians.
In an attempt to speed up the inaugural carnival’s preparations, 10 committees were formed yesterday.
The committees are: technical, floats, volunteer, accommodation and catering, marketing, security, transport and logistics, entertainment, production and hospitality.
Three carnival routes are under consideration, but it is looking increasingly likely that the wider Samora Machel Avenue will get the nod over Robert Mugabe Road.
Many at the meeting felt that Samora Machel Avenue will be the ideal route because it houses many corporates who can be persuaded to be part of the carnival.
“The technical committee will sit down and evaluate the three routes and see the one more suitable for the event. We need to have a pre-staging area where the carnival will start and post-staging area where the carnival will end. We are hoping that the carnival will end at the Glamis Stadium”, said hidzidzi. – Dakarai Mashava, Entertainment Editor
