Zanu PF in plot to assassinate MDC: Biti

HARARE – Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC claims to have unearthed a plot by Zanu PF to assassinate its leadership ahead of watershed elections expected this year.

The sensational claims were made yesterday by party secretary-general Tendai Biti while addressing over 2 000 supporters in Chitungwiza town, 30 km south east of the capital Harare.

Biti, who is also Finance minister in the shaky coalition government, said his party had information that Zanu PF would not resort to open violence against his party supporters as was the case with the controversial 2008 presidential run-off but will use systematic elimination of the party’s leadership through assassinations.

He said Zanu PF was afraid of losing the right to host the United Nations World Tourism Organisation general assembly set for August and would thus change tactics.

“I have been informed today by our friends in the security forces that they have a plot to assassinate our leadership to instil fear into our supporters. They cannot win any elections without using violence but we are not afraid of anyone,” said Biti. – Mugove Tafirenyika
