New format for 7s Summer Series

HARARE – The SPAR and Lion Lager Summer Series get underway at Old Hararians on Saturday under a new format set to give Zimbabwe Sevens Rugby selectors a better view of the talent on offer.

With the Harare International Sevens tournament slated for March in Harare fast approaching, selectors feel this edition of the Summer Series should be a platform for individual display and not necessarily teams results.

This innovation in the running of the event will go a long way in helping players plying their trade for weaker teams to stand up and be counted.

The new format will see 12 Northern Region-based teams fight it out this weekend.

Players from the 12 teams will be aiming for selection into the two Northern Region select sides to be chosen after the weekend.

The tournament will then move to Gweru Sports Club where six rugby clubs from that region will have their chance to impress selectors.

Players who shine in Gweru will make up the one Southern Region select side.

Those who do not make it into the Northern or Southern select sides have a chance of making the Barbarian select side.

The North and South teams will then meet on February 23 at Harare Sports Club where the initial phase for selection into Cheetahs and Goshawks sides will begin.

The new format automatically means defending champions Old Georgians will have to wait until the end of the year to fight for a third straight Summer Series victory.
