Harare City to bolster squad

HARARE – Castle Premiership side Harare City will hold trials tomorrow at Gwanzura Stadium as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the 2013 season.

City, who finished their debut season in the top flight in ninth place last year, are hoping for an improved campaign in the forthcoming season.

“We will be starting our preparations for the 2013 season on Tuesday by holding trials at Gwanzura Stadium,” said Sunshine Boys coach Bigboy Mawiwi.

“We are a club that believes in youth and we are hoping to find some young talent that can fit into our system.”

Last season the club had such young players as Kamalongoshi Chidzero, Silas Songani and Willard Kalongonda, who all impressed in their debut season in the top flight.

Kalongonda even attracted the interest of champions Dynamos, who tried to lure him during the off-season break.

Furnishing proof of City’s ambitions, the club was able to fend off the champions’ interest in the Zimbabwe youth international, who is on loan from Northern Region Division One side DC Academy.

Mawiwi added: “The emphasis during the trials will be on strikers. That is one area we showed some weakness last season. We will also be looking to find at least two or three defenders.”

City’s first season in the top flight yielded only 24 goals in 30 league matches as their strikers found the going tough in the Premiership.

At the back, the Sunshine Boys were a solid unit, conceding only 24 goals and making theirs the fourth best defence in the league behind only the top three of Dynamos, Highlanders and Chicken Inn.

Meanwhile, City are confident of concluding negotiations of signing forward Osborne Mukuradare on a free transfer from Monomotapa.

Mukuradare’s contract with the 2012 Mbada Diamonds Cup finalist ran out at the end of last season and City are favourites to land the forward.

Mawiwi said negotiations with the 25-year-old striker are at an advanced stage and a deal is very likely to be concluded this week.

City is also on the verge of snapping up fullback David Kutyauripo, who has been frozen out of Dynamos by coach Callisto Pasuwa.

Kutyauripo has not been included in the DeMbare 2013 African Champions League squad and looked like he was headed for newly-promoted Triangle, but it looks like he will now join City.
