HARARE – Highlanders finished in second place following a season that promised so much, beating relegated side Blue Rangers yesterday.
Heritan Masuku opened Bosso’s account after he headed in a clever chip from midfielder Bhekimpilo Ncube in the 64th minute.
Soccer Star of the Year finalist Masimba Mambare put the match beyond Rangers’ reach in the 79th minute when he slotted home from close range.
“It’s a great privilege for me to have scored Highlanders’ first and last goals of the season,” Mambare told the Daily News after the match.
“It’s good that we finished the season on a good note, unfortunately the championship didn’t come our way.”
Blue Rangers started the match more purposefully in a match that was of academic interest to them following their demotion mid-week when they went down 1-7 to Hwange at the Colliery.
Highlanders, on the other hand, were subdued and could have gone to the half time break trailing by at least three goals had Rangers not wasted numerous chances that came their way.
After the break, Rangers continued to create chances but just like the first half, they failed to bury the chances until the visitors were revitalised by Masuku’s opening goal after 64 minutes.
Mambare’s goal 11 minutes from time virtually ended the match as a contest but Highlanders kept on piling pressure until the final whistle.
