Kuwadzana hosts dancehall nights

HARARE – Kuwadzana joint Ritz Sports Club is resuming the “Dancehall Night event” where musicians showcase their artistic skills to promote the genre.

Dancehall concerts are slated every Sunday at the high density joint.

The joint proprietor Isaiah Chigayo said they are resuming the dancehall night following a-close-to-a-year sabbatical.

“The last dancehall concert was held in February after that the joint went under massive renovation as a way of creating more space inside the bar. Now there is more space inside the bar and we are resuming dancehall concerts,” said Chigayo.

The event resumed last Sunday with the rising dancehall artiste Freeman real name Emegy Chizanga of Joina City fame performing.

Freeman was supported by Danger Zone Crew.

Templeman and Gary B are expected to deliver a sizzling performance next Sunday.

“We are expecting Templeman and Gary B on Sunday and I am optimistic that the event will positively transform artistes’ lives. So far little known dancehall artistes such as Tawanda Chatikobo from Kuwadzana are benefitting from the event,” said Chigayo.

Chigayo said he has an interest in dancehall music because the genre is promising to reach dizzy heights in the near future.

Prominent dancehall promoter-cum-musician Simbarashe Johnson Maphosa aka Godfatha Templeman expressed gratitude to all club owners who are promoting dancehall genre.

“As dancehall artistes and promoters we are into partnerships with club owners such as Chigayo, Red Fox and Club Kebab, we thank them for giving us a platform to showcase our artistic skills to the audience. These concerts are for free as a way of attracting a larger audience — to make sure that all the ghetto youths are empowered,” said Templeman.

Templeman, also a co-host on a radio programme Zim-dancehall at Star FM with Gary B said he is working tirelessly to promote dancehall since the genre has a bright future in the country.

“Dancehall music is largely confined to youths in Zimbabwe and is frequently played on cell phones, kombis and clubs — this shows that the genre is stabilising with each passing day,” he said.

Artistes who used to perform at the Kuwadzana joint include Ricky Fire, Guspy Warrior, Elder Tista and D Flexx among others. – Vasco Chaya
