HARARE – On-song Highlanders forward Masimba Mambare believes his Zimbabwe national team call-up is a sign that his efforts this season are finally bearing fruit.
The attacking midfielder, who has been in irresistible form for Bosso in the 2012 Castle Premiership season with nine goals, was included in a 24-member Warriors provisional squad to face Angola in a decisive 2013 African Nations Cup qualifier in Luanda next month.
Zimbabwe face the Palancas Negras in the Angolan capital carrying a 3-1 first leg lead, leaving them on the verge of qualifying for next year’s Afcon finals in neighbouring South Africa.
Prior to his call-up, Mambare had only donned the green-and-gold of Zimbabwe in an unofficial friendly against Botswana in August, but his consistent form at club level has made Warriors coach Rahman Gumbo sit up and take notice.
“I’m obviously happy, at least my efforts are being recognised, everything has its time and I’m just happy I have been given this chance,” Mambare told the Daily News yesterday.
Mambare was the toast when Highlanders edged Shabanie Mine 1-0 in a league match on Sunday before his injury time strike on Wednesday catapulted Bosso back to the top of the Castle Premiership log standings.
He has emerged as one of the key men in Bosso’s quest for their first league title six years.
Mambare is no stranger to a league title himself, having won the championship with Motor Action in 2010.
Having started the season on a slow note, being restricted to cameo roles, his bustling runs have seen him cement his place in Bosso’s starting line-up.
“I think playing alongside (former Motor Action teammate) Milton Ncube has helped me a lot since we have been together for a long time now,” Mambare said.
Turning to PSL title race, Mambare claims the Bulawayo giants are not reading too much into their 23-game unbeaten run.
“The team is obviously happy to be on top of the log again. But everyone is now working hard to win the next game,” he said.
“Yes, we are unbeaten, but we are not reading too much into it. It’s all about the next game and preparing our best to win.”
