HARARE – The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) will on Friday host a Golf Day at Wingate Golf Club in a bid to raise funds to set up a Sports Development Fund.
Part of the proceeds will go towards supporting selected charity organisations.
The Golf Day, dubbed the “Chairman’s Charity Golf Day,” will be running its second edition this year following last year’s inaugural event which raised close to $23 000.
The SRC is chaired by Bulawayo lawyer Joseph James.
Part of that amount was used to support Mudavanhu Zimcare School from Midlands, Thuthuka Street Children from Bulawayo, as well as Kidzcan Cancer Organization and Multiple- Sclerosis Society of Zimbabwe, both from Harare.
The remaining balance of $12 672.33 was channelled towards the Sport Development Fund which assists highly talented but less fortunate athletes.
SRC spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said: “Invitations to the Golf Day have been sent to various corporate entities and National Sport Associations. Each team shall pay an affiliation fee of $200 to field a team, over and above the donations that they may make to this worthy cause.”
The Chairman’s Charity Golf Day initiative was launched to supplement sport funding from government.
“Since it is clear that resources being availed to sport are dwindling by the day there is need to come up with such extra and innovative measures to ensure that sport continues to develop,” he said.
